Thame Bowls Club Weekly News Report No 15

On Wednesday 24th July, Thame had to reduce to 3 triples against Didcot, which wasn't so bad as it seems Didcot were struggling also. Captain Colin French was also struggling to get a third skip but was saved by Dave Holland and Jan Sergeant offering to do 9 ends each. He sends his grateful thanks to them.  We were welcomed to Didcot by Captain Ronnie and her team, our teams did their best, but unfortunately fell behind and we lost 37 to 55. Ours closest team being Tony Battaglia, Deirdre Page skipped by Roger Mackriell 13/16.  Still a lovely afternoon although a bit warm.

On Sunday 28th July, which was a very warm afternoon, both sides at Abingdon suffered a bit.  It was a challenging green with more bare patches than grass on several rinks and the home advantage was obvious, as Thame struggled at first with the speed of the green. The final score was 66 to Thame and 95 to Abingdon. We did have one winning rink, Tony Battaglia, Dierdre Page and Ian Rutherford with a score of 18-9.  We also had one draw with Sandra French, John Wilkinson and John Holmes and one rink lost on the final end, so the results were not as bad as the score suggests. Captain Roger Blackburn said that ‘this is the second week on the trot that Tony Battaglia has been in the top rink, so well-done Tony’.

The ladies match scheduled for Wednesday 31st July was cancelled at the last minute because of the intense heat but they enjoyed a friendly afternoon inside.

Thame’s men’s league team suffered another defeat on Thursday 1st August against Kidlington who could well be promoted to the first division in a week or so. The overall score was 44 shots to 84 but Thame won on one rink, skipped by Chris Shannon to gain 1 league point. This point may become vital as there is just one league match remaining (against Witney Town A away on Thursday 8th August) with both sides on 23 points. Witney have the edge with the better shot difference and the loser will be relegated to division 3.
