Thame Bowls Club Weekly News Report No 5
On Sunday 12th May, Captain John Gilbey and his team welcomed us to Winslow, and although, after an embarrassment with the start times, the game got underway on a sunny afternoon although it clouded over halfway through. Another loss with Winslow 110 to Thame 60. Our best team drawing 13 each, skipped by Les Canfield ably assisted by Heather Hallchurch and June Greene. Captain Colin French apologised to the team for the drubbing and said that ‘he is hoping that it will not harm their desire to play. Hopefully we'll fare better against Henley’.
The ladies match due to be played on Monday 13th May home against Hazells had to be cancelled as the opposition were unable to field a team. This is the third match that has been cancelled against the ladies, and possibly reflects the sad demise of the sport around the area (apart from Thame).
The Men’s League match on Thursday 16th May proved to be more difficult than the previous week as South Oxford had dropped down from the first division and Thame lost by 55 shots to 72. They did gain one league point however as the foursome of Mel Warner, Barry Green, Stewart Rump and skip David White won on their rink, by 14 shots (27 – 13).
On Saturday 18 May, Thame played a home match against Hagbourne in warm sunshine captained by Ian Rutherford. They won on 3 of the 5 rinks and Les Canfield with Ian Griffiths and Jenny Reed had a stormer of a top rink winning by 22 shots but these 3 victories were more than balanced out by results on the two losing rinks and they lost 82-75 overall.
